Review by Samantha Carr

I was due to speak in the afternoon but wanted to arrive early so that I could see the first speaker; Sara Delphi and also to meet everyone as I had never been to a Paranormal Investigation before.  I have sat in mediumship circles and talked to spirits in a safe environment and have been to Spiritualist Churches; but visiting the ‘spirits’ in their own domain was new to me. I wanted to find out what was involved and how the investigation was run.

I set out with plenty of time, but I had not realised how much traffic there would be for the Devon County Show; with much praying to the angels in the car I arrived only slightly late and was greeted by group founder Byron Jackson.  He immediately put me at ease and I went into what I later found out was the school room and took my seat to listen to the rest of Sara’s talk.

It was interesting that some of the information that Sara mentioned about the Tarot, I have been investigating for my second book; it is always nice to watch someone else talk when they have a passion for the subject. Then it was time to break for a much needed cuppa and to meet some of the lovely folk of Haunted Devon; there were new members as well as veterans.  After much talking it was time for lunch, I am sure the group catered for all of the invisible guests as there was enough to feed an army! There were jokey threats made by Byron and Graham Chapman (group chairman) that if we did not eat more sausage rolls we would not be allowed to leave the site.

Next it was my time to talk about my experiences and how I came to write ‘A Knight Journey’. I explained how I came to be inspired with the cover of the book. I had seen a vision of the cover image and was very excited and was lucky to be put into contact with Jamie Dodd, who was able to translate that vision into the image on the book.

I talked through the various topics covered in the book and some new information which I was keen to share as my research is very much ongoing. In particular my research into the sacred symbol of the ‘tau’ has continued to amaze me. As always, it is difficult to cram an intensive 5 years of research into an hour long talk. I was pleased to see the crowd were all still awake and smiling as I finished and some even had questions.

We then moved into the Chapel itself for a demonstration by Jon Chase, Hypnotist. Jonathan demonstrated on several members of the audience and several members were quickly put under. They  were able to recall past life information, including names, which I am sure will lead to some very interesting research.

We then received a demonstration by Byron and Graham of the technical equipment that we would be using for the evening’s investigation at the Chapel. I am not a techie but it looked impressive. The equipment included EMF meters, EVP recording equipment, spot thermometers, voice recorders for the group to log any anomalous events and several other items which escaped my non-technical mind. We split into groups and registered some baseline recordings ready for the night’s investigation. We then all went to the pub for dinner; if this is what paranormal investigation is all about then I can see myself becoming a regular!

After dinner we went back to the chapel and were briefed for the evening; safety, sensibility and security were important aspects to the group’s ethos. A member of the group led us through a psychic protection exercise and then we went into the Chapel for the first part of the evening’s investigation.

Several people were able to see and feel different changes in energy which is often associated with paranormal phenomena. Some members of the group felt hot and had palpitations. Others saw visions of spirits and orbs and others were able to talk to spirits using their psychic skills. We also used glass divination to talk to any entities present. Each team took it in turns to sit in the Chapel and then the School Room. The whole evenings events were recorded and there are hours of footage for the team to go through to check for phenomena which often doesn’t appear visible to the naked (no matter how well trained) eye.

All in all it was a great day, the team are very friendly and welcoming and are receptive to new ideas. I’m looking forward to my next investigation and am looking forward to trying some research to see if I can dream of a venue before the investigation and then verify insights during my visit.
